Though the current St. James Lutheran Church was built after a fire in 1969, the original structure dates from 1847. Jennie Wade, the only civilian to lose her life in the battle of Gettysburg, attended church here. A plaque located on the building mentions Jennie’s attendance and that she celebrated her Lutheran confirmation here in April 1862. It also states that a temporary field hospital was set up in this place after the battle.
